Dental implants mimic the natural teeth and tooth roots, making them the closest possible replacement for natural teeth. Yet, as with any surgery, there’s a lot to consider before having dental implant treatment. To help you, we’ve created this downloadable guide, which includes:

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once integrated with the bone, it supports a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture.
There are three components to a dental implant: the implant (titanium post), the abutment (connector), and the crown (visible tooth). Dental implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or a full arch. Because they integrate with the jawbone, they closely replicate the function and appearance of natural teeth.
The cost for a dental implant to replace a single missing tooth can range from about $4,000 upwards. The price can vary depending on multiple factors including:
During your consultation at Macquarie Street Dental, we’ll discuss all your treatment options and the cost. Some private health insurance policies may cover part of the cost of dental implant surgery. You can also talk to us about our flexible payment options.
Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover the cost of dental implants. This is because dental implants are considered an elective cosmetic procedure. If you choose sedation, this will attract a medicare rebate. Additionally, in some cases (for example, if you have significant tooth loss) you may qualify to access your super for dental implants.
– Pre-op
When you’re ready to proceed, the steps are:
During your personal consultation, world-renowned implant expert Dr Dunn will take a 3D scan of your jawbone, tooth impressions, and photos. These are used to inform the size, shape and position of your dental implant, tooth design, and overall treatment plan.
– Step 1 — dental implant placement
The implant is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Sedation is available if preferred. In suitable cases, a temporary tooth may be placed on the same day.
– Step 2 — implant tooth or tooth bridge is placed
After 3-6 months, once your jawbone and gums have healed, it’s time for your permanent implant tooth or tooth bridge. Dr Dunn will ensure that the implant has successfully healed with the bone. He’ll take an impression of the implant, so that your new tooth can be beautifully hand-crafted by a master Australian ceramist. This will be ready in 2-3 weeks.
