Jaw Joint Pain

Jaw pain can be debilitating and can affect your quality of life. In some cases the pain can hinder you from smiling, eating and speaking.

The jaw joint is situated where your lower jaw is connected to your skull. This joint is constantly in use as you eat, speak and swallow. Pain is experienced in this joint due to:

  • Wear and tear
  • Grinding or clenching the teeth
  • Misalignment of the upper and lower jaws
  • Stress
  • Arthritis

The symptoms of jaw pain include:

  • Ear pain
  • Tenderness or pain in the jaw muscles
  • Temple/cheek pain
  • Jaw popping or clicking
  • Lock-jaw
  • Frequent headaches

Jaw Pain Treatment Options

After thorough physical and diagnostic tests, our aim is to reduce the amount of stress on the joints by finding ways to relax the jaw. There are many ways to achieve this and sometimes one or more methods will need to be employed. In Many cases, some additional measures may be taken:

Medication: We may prescribe something to ease the pain.

Dental Treatment: For some sufferers, dental work or the use of a dental appliance may alleviate the pain associated with TMJ. Simply improving the bite or the use of a nightguard to cushion grinding teeth can make a marked improvement.

In more advanced cases surgery may be required to correct/repair the disk between the joints.

Patient Solution

We were lucky enough to have Martin visit us all the way from Spain. He had been grinding and bruxing his teeth quite badly and had worn down his teeth down a considerable amount, which was starting to cause his bite to collapse and become uncomfortable. In order to correct his bite, and to relieve the pressure in his jaw, we used all-ceramic crowns on most of his teeth. This will protect his teeth long term from any fractures and give him a far younger look!
